Full Description

This standard covers the installation of weather strip products to doors, windows, hatches and other openings in the envelope of buildings.

It is intended for building inspectors, sealing contractors and workers, weather strip contractors and workers, and government agencies having authority over air-sealing work in buildings. The standard is of interest to the manufacturers of windows, doors, sliding glass doors and operable skylights.

Its purpose is to establish the minimum requirements to ensure acceptable levels of workmanship and durability of the finished work, and to minimize the risks to the health and safety of the sealing worker and the occupants of the buildings in which the work is conducted.

Although this standard relates to the partial air-sealing of buildings by installation of weather strip products, such work is normally conducted as part of a general retrofit air-sealing operation, which may include the use of caulks and sealants. Where relevant, the standard refers to issues which may arise within this broader context.

It is assumed that the users of the standard are familiar with the terms, procedures and requirements of good building practice.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any existing applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
