This method is intended to measure "Opacity -- paper backing," formerly known as "Printing Opacity," and "Opacity -- white backing," formerly known as "Contrast Ratio." It may be used for coloured paper provided that the reflectance (paper backing) is greater than 20% and simultaneously the opacity (paper backing) is greater than 45%. It is not intended for highly transparent papers such as glassine.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this method may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous.
