Montgomery Watson and the City of San Diego have been implementing a majortesting program to certify various ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF)membranes by the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) and/or verifytheir performance through the EPA/NSF Environmental Technology Verification (ETV)program. Two testing protocols are being implemented through this testingprogram. One protocol, which was approved by CDHS, focuses on pathogen removalcapabilities of the membrane at the manufacturers specified highest operationalflux. Another protocol, which was approved by NSF, focuses on the operationalperformance of the membrane system at specified operating conditions and varioustesting seasons. This testing effort was initiated in September 1998 andcontinues to this date as more manufacturers become involved. Eight manufacturershave participated in the CDHS certification program and four manufacturers haveparticipated in the ETV program to date. This paper provides an overview of theCDHS certification and the NSF verification programs and the type of datatypically generated from such studies. Includes table, figures.
