Full Description

This research combines the disciplines of environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and polymer chemistry in order to explore new membrane materials and ultimately to develop high performance, ultra-low fouling membrane materials. Several new polymer formulations have been synthesized and characterized. Two have been cast into thin-film composite membranes with a polysulfone support layer in order to test their water permeation, rejection of natural organic matter (NOM) and fouling against a commercial nanofiltration membrane. The ultimate goal is to produce a nanofiltration membrane that can reject NOM as effectively as commercially available membranes but with either less tendency for fouling or easier cleaning. Includes table, figures.
