Several characteristics of membranes must be known in order to make membrane selections for pilot testing and predictions of membrane flux, rejection and fouling in drinking water treatment applications. Membrane surface charge, hydrophobicity of the membrane material, pore size and pore size distribution are all important characteristics. This paper looks at modeling of solute transport through membranes as a means of characterizing perhaps the most basic of these parameters, the pore size and pore size distribution.
