Full Description

A surface complexation model was examined to improve predictions of humic substance interaction with preformed amorphous aluminum hydroxide surfaces. When there were no species competing with humic substances for surface sorption sites, the aluminum hydroxide dose was more important than pH in controlling the extent of humic substance removal. The accuracy of the surface complexation model improved at higher levels of TOC. It is hoped that the model can eventually predict surface charge of flocs produced during coagulation of natural waters, in addition to improving prediction of TOC removal during enhanced coagulation under a wide range of water quality conditions. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
