Full Description

Inactivation of indigenous (total coliforms, aerobic spores) and spiked (MS-2 coliphage)microorganisms in reuse water from several wastewater treatment facilities across NorthAmerica is being studied. By evaluating a variety of current and emerging treatmenttechnologies, including ultraviolet (UV), Osub3/sub, peracetic acid (PAA), and advanced oxidation processes (e.g. UV-Hsub2/subOsub2/sub,UV-PAA etc.), a comparative understanding of each technology will be developed.Initial results show rapid inactivation of indigenous coliforms by UV-based technologies, and log-linear inactivation of indigenous spores and spiked MS-2 virus. Addition ofHsub2/subOsub2/sub to the sample prior to irradiation slightly improves coliform inactivation but has noimpact on aerobic spores or MS-2. Ozonation is highly effective against coliform andMS-2, but largely ineffective against aerobic spores. Includes 24 references, table, figures.
