The ideas presented in this article contradict some firmly entrenched notions in the water industry. Observations made by the author cast doubt on the infallibility of a negative Langelier index as an indication of the occurrence of red water. Complaints of red water (and perhaps corrosion rates) were reduced when the calcium carbonate precipitation potential-hydroxide parameter exceeded 1.0. Includes 4 references, table, figure.
