The 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act require the US Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate national primary drinking water regulations specifying criteria to determine which systems using surface water sources would be required to use filtration equipment. The agency is also developing criteria designed to assure that filtration is satisfactorily practiced if it is required. Many of the thousands of unfiltered surface water supplies in the United States will be required to install some form of filtration technology. This article defines filtration and describes how the design and operation of a filtration system are related to the required performance and the quality of the water to be treated. Includes 18 references, tables.
