Full Description

The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest users of process water. This paper describes a systematic approach for preparing a water balance (water audit). A block flow diagram is used to identify areas of the mill and the volume of water entering and leaving each area. It also identifies type of water, temperature, stock, liquor, additives, and heat inputs. Water usage for various areas of the mill can be compared to industry standards; a table lists water use rates for selected mills. Computer modeling and simulation then help the mill manager reduce water consumption.
