Full Description

The overall objective of this study was to examine ozonation and biological treatment of DBP precursors and biodegradable organic matter (BOM). This paper will report on: ozone's effect on BOM, nutrients and biological treatment as measured by aldehydes, assimilable organic carbon (AOC), total organic carbon (TOC) and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria; ozone's oxidation of DBP precursors; the time required to establish steady-state removal in biological filters; and the differences in performance and operation of parallel biological filters operating under different conditions. These objectives were accomplished by weekly monitoring of pilot-plant processes. Precursor was measured as the formation potential (FP) for the THM, HAA and total organic halide (TOX) reactions.
