Full Description

The disinfection byproduct speciation is dependent upon the concentration of bromide in the source water, the type of treatment used to remove organic DBP precursors (coagulation, granular activated carbon), and the disinfection conditions (free chlorine, ozone). This paper summarizes the effects of treatment on THM speciation. The impact of bromide on techniques to characterize natural organic matter is briefly discussed. The impact of chlorination conditions (formation potential versus simulated distribution system) and methods by which to illustrate and describe speciation is also discussed. This paper focuses upon THM formation, although similar efforts could be applied to HAAs and other groups of DBPs.
