This brief paper discusses how and why nanofiltration is used to treat potable water for Paris, France. The Paris suburbs rely on surface waters high in dissolved organic matter and containing a variety of trace organic pollutants. In addition, these water resources are frequently contaminated by illegal discharges or accidental spills. This water quality and the regulatory climate opens the way to using membrane processes in drinking water treatment. Nanofiltration has been selected by Compagnie Generale des Eaux (CGE) as the best available technology to meet the new challenge facing the drinking water industry. This paper presents preliminary results obtained at Mery-sur-Oise, one of CGE's three plants in the Paris suburbs with a total production capacity of 1,870,000 m3/d. The role of nanofiltration in this treatment chain is to replace ozonation and GAC as a refining step. The author briefly describes feed water characteristics, efficiency of nanofiltration, and benefits of nanofiltration.
