Full Description

Proposed requirements under the Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule dictate the need to establish particle concentration and log removals under varying operational conditions using presently available methodologies. A low range light-scattering particle counter was used to measure particle numbers in size ranges from 0.5 to 20+ microns (um) at the influent, adsorption clarifier effluent and filter effluent. In addition, water samples at each location were collected and later counted with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in the 2 to 20+ um range. A relatively large volume of water was also sampled at each location using a nominal 1 um cartridge filter and organic matter in the 5 to 200+ um range was counted by microscopic particulate analysis (MPA). During the 2 year study, 8 sample dates were chosen to represent a variety of source water and operating conditions. A cationic polymer was used throughout the study. The coagulants utilized were aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, and poly-aluminum chloride (PAC). In addition, a non-ionic polymer was used to enhance the removal efficiency of an adsorption clarifier.
